Untitled The Silent Killer - Carbon Monoxide You can't see it, smell it or taste it, but it might be in your home. Exposure to Carbon Monoxide (CO) can cause sudden loss of consciousness and death. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. People who are sleeping or who have been drinking alcohol can die from CO poisoning before having other symptoms. To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Install at least one battery-operated low level CO detector (UL2034 approved) on each level of your home. Install and maintain in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation. Replace the battery when you change the clocks and replace the detector every 5 years. Have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances inspected & serviced by a qualified technician every year. Do not use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window. Do not run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open. Do not burn anything in a stove or fireplace that isn't vented. Do not heat your house with a gas oven. If your detector sounds or you suspect CO poisoning, leave the home and call 911 from a neighbor's house. Firefighters are trained and equipped to provide medical aid to you as well as use specialized equipment to check your house for the presence of carbon monoxide.
