Fire departments across America responded to 1.6 million fires in 2006. These fires resulted in 3,245 civilian deaths, 16,400 injuries, and more than 11 billion dollars in property damage. There is a death every 162 minutes and an injury every 32 minutes. Home fires accounted for 2,580 or 80% of the civilian deaths.

Studies have shown that approximately 66% of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, but only 35% have ever practiced it.

Firefighters are pleased to see that over half of the population has an escape plan in case of an emergency, but are now urging the public to practice those plans. When you gather everyone in the household to make a plan be sure to:

  • Review the floor plan of your home.
  • Mark the locations of smoke detectors/ and check them.
  • Mark two ways out of each room.
  • Choose an outside meeting place away from the home.
  • Once you are outside stay outside until everything is okay.
  • Memorize the emergency phone number 911.
  • Practice, practice, practice.
The object is to practice escape plans not to frighten your children. So, start off with drills in the daytime and move them to the night as your family gets better and better.
