Highlights
FY 2006-2007

  • Handled 2,256 emergency calls for service. This is a 4% increase over the previous year.
  • No serious fire related injuries occurred.
  • No fire related deaths occurred.
  • Total fire loss in South Jordan City was held to less than $110,000.
  • Upgraded the service level of all quick response units from EMT-Basic to EMT-Intermediate.
  • Developed a pre-hospital 12-lead EKG initiative. Full implementation of this initiative will occur in July of 2007.
  • Developed and implemented a comprehensive firefighter health assessment and physical ability program; the program includes a validated department specific physical ability test for applicants and incumbents.
  • Completed a hazard analysis for South Jordan City.
  • Developed and implemented the Neighborhood Network System to assist with disaster preparedness and response.
  • Developed full functional response capability in slope evacuation, confined space rescue, machinery/vehicle extrication, structural collapse, water rescue and ice rescue.
    • Using grant funds, acquired a comprehensive equipment cache.
    • Using grant funds, provided training to 21 department members.
    • Secured funding, developed detailed specifications, purchased and put into service a new Heavy Rescue Unit.
  • Administered 800 flu vaccinations to local seniors, City employees and other residents.
  • Developed and submitted a 2025 staffing plan.
  • Identified the need for and location of future fire stations.
  • Acquired the property for Fire Station 63, a new fire station to be located on the east side of the City.
  • Developed proposals and identified additional funding to support reclassification of the fire assistant from part-time to full-time, reclassification of all paramedics from Grade 14 to Grade 16, and the addition of one (1) new Battalion Chief.
  • Acquired equipment and supplies to care for staff during a large scale event or disaster. Includes sleeping bags, sleeping pads, all weather tents, portable toilets and related supplies, ice chests, drinking water and MRE's to support 22 firefighters for several days.
  • Implemented a Public Information Officer (PIO) program.
    • PIO's completed a State sponsored Basic PIO Course, the Emergency Management Institute resident Advanced PIO Course, and the National Fire Academy resident Fire Service Communications Course.
    • More than 12 PSA's were released.
    • Department members were featured in stories that aired on local television stations during Fire Prevention Week, the Christmas Holidays and a PSA on emergency contact information.
    • PIO's interacted with the media during or following more than a dozen emergency events.
  • Developed and coordinated two functional exercises including fire drills in all City facilities and an employee communications exercise
  • Developed, awarded and managed two multi-agency RFP's. Eight different fire departments participated in the RFP for Structural Firefighting Clothing; and five different fire departments participated in the RFP for uniforms.
  • Two fire fighters successfully completed the Law Enforcement Special Functions training and certification program offered by Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training. One of these individuals was assigned to assist the Police Department as a S.W.A.T. Medic and the other was assigned to the fire investigation team.
  • Inspected and flowed 2,045 fire hydrants.
  • More than 6,500 feet of fire suppression hose was service tested in accordance with NFPA.
  • All ground and aerial ladders were inspected and service tested.
  • All Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and face masks were flow-tested in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and NFPA.
  • All apparatus pumps were tested as recommended by NFPA.
  • Conducted more than 600 life safety inspections.
  • Hired the first dedicated Emergency Management Coordinator for South Jordan City.
  • Enhanced existing programs or services and established new services through grant funds and charitable contributions. Alternative funding supported the purchase of the following:
    • Structural collapse equipment and supplies;
    • Protective clothing;
    • EOC equipment & supplies;
    • Heart Monitors;
    • CERT training/supplies;
    • Auto-Pulse Device;
    • Disaster Preparedness Supplies;
    • Water rescue equipment; and
    • Technical rescue training.
  • Off-duty firefighters assisted with several service projects and/or other charitable events.
    • Firefighters volunteered at Camp Nah Nah Mah, a burn camp for burn survivors between the ages of 6 - 11.
    • Firefighters ran in the Tunnels to Towers memorial run in New York City.
    • Firefighters collected donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
    • Firefighters assisted with a fund raiser for Angel Hands.
